Coromandel IV vs Keswick IV

Peter Zacpal has become the third player at our almighty club to play 400 matches.
It was a grand occasion for the "Silver Fox" and he was duly awarded with the captaincy of the 4th XI in Greg Kearsley's absence.

First Day

The match had also been promoted as the long-awaited Kearsley vs Kearsley clash. The opposition included Greg's younger brother Barry - a stalwart of Keswick Cricket Club for many seasons, mostly in A Grade matches as an attacking batsman but now in his golden years and enjoying life in the lower grades (as an opening bowler!) The festivities were dampened slightly after injury forced Greg to miss the first week of the match, denying him the chance to bowl to Barry after Zacpal won the toss and elected to field first.

As has been customary over many years, Zacpal opened the bowling and was inspired to take 4 for 46 from his full 15 overs. It is his first four wicket haul this season - and the 75th in his illustrious career! His overall wicket tally has always been a conversation starter at Coromandel and it now stands at 861 - just 78 behind record holder Gus Hunter.

Peter captured the first three wickets of the innings to have Keswick in trouble at 3 for 68 in the 19th over.
However the bowlers found the middle order hard to crack. Barry Kearsley was amongst a host of past section one players for Keswick who still knew a thing or two about the game.
With Keswick comfortably placed at 3 for 120 after 29 overs, Grant Wannan (playing his 194th match and 48th alongside Zacpal) was introduced into the attack. "Grunter" then produced a dazzling exhibition of controlled offspin, displaying wonderful flight and use of the strong wind to finish the day with four wickets.

Wickets fell regularly before a wag in the tail saw Keswick bowled out at stumps for 232. It presents a tough chase, even on a small ground and fast outfield.
However the task could have been even harder without the superb A grade fielding display by Anthony "Fitzy" Fitzgerald and (Peter's son) Simon "Junior" Zacpal. Fitzy worked tirelessly patrolling the deep mid wicket boundary whilst Simon produced countless diving saves in the covers and also completed a sentimental skied catch from his dad's bowling. They were duly rewarded with the fielding votes.

Keswick 232 (P.Zacpal 4/46, Wannan 4/42)

Second Day

Unfortunately Zac's team were unable to provide him with a win in his milestone match.
Our batsmen were always in trouble. Richard Hunter continued his consistent season, topscoring with 39. However only he and Simon Zacpal (29) managed to reach 20.
Greg Kearsley missed out (or should that be "avoided") the opportunity to face his (younger) sibling. When he strode to the crease at the fall of the sixth wicket, Barry had already completed his 15 overs.

Milestone man Zacpal occupied his specialist batting position of number 11 (for the 89th time) and finished unbeaten on one. It is the 14th time in his 314 innings that his teammates have collapsed around him and left him stranded 99 short of a century.

Statistical notes:
1. Simon's 29 runs from only 41 balls continues a fine record at Seaview Downs Primary School. He averages 35.67 and has a strike rate of 107 runs per hundred balls at this venue - the career highlight being his club highest score of 72 in 2009.

2. Richard Hunter now has five scores of thirty or more this season. With a highest score of 48 he is in serious danger of breaking the record for the most 30s in a season without a half-century. The record is currently six - jointly held by Mike Maclean and Andrew Magarey (in seasons 2002/03 and 2006/07 respectively)

Keswick 232
Coromandel 131 (Hunter 39, S.Zacpal 29, P.Zacpal 1*) Scoreboard
