Round 5. 28th November & 5th December 2009

At Edwardstown Oval

Coromandel vs South Road

First Day

The 1st XI, fresh from their victory last week against ICC Sharks, ventured to Edwardstown Oval looking for their second win this season. It was a good toss for captain Darren Coulter to lose, as his team took advantage of the favourable conditions to bowl South Road out for 83. Chris Norman continues to hit the gloves of wicket-keeper Aaron Garard very hard, finishing with 4 for 15 whilst Josh Lourens produced his best bowling for Coromandel so far with four for 27.
In the two seasons since South Road returned to section one, Coromandel have been convincingly beaten (once outright) on both occasions. Coulter's team will be hoping to return to their winning ways against South Road.

Coromandel III vs Southern II

First Day

As Bill Lawry would day "it's all happening" - 15 wickets fell in just 40 overs.
Winning the toss and "inserting" the opposition, Coromandel bowled an undermanned opponent out for only 38 - Southern's lowest score against Coromandel. Will Hillier started with five consecutive maiden overs before finishing with 5/17 and extending his total to 24 wickets this season, remaining a rough chance of passing Chris Garth's record of 34
wickets before Christmas.
However, Southern showed their strength was their bowling, reducing Coromandel to 3/16 when the heavens opened late in the day. Captain Mike Maclean was keen to use every minute possible of daylight and pass the required total before stumps. In a haste for runs, he was out caught and the team collapsed to 5/23. Some nervous moments were experienced as the score went from 5/23 to 6/31 and then 7/35 before Graham Carpenter and Josh McManus guided the team home for a first innings win and a declaration was made at stumps with the score 7/40.
So much a graveyard for Coromandel teams in the past (only one win in four visits prior to this season), Serpentine reserve has now produced a win for the 2nd XI and 3rd XI already this season.
