Round 8. 20th & 27th January 2007

Extraordinary! Just two games ago matches ago in round six, most matches were rescheduled as one day matches due to temperature of 41 degrees. On the first day of round eight, all but two of Coromandel's matches were reduced to a one day games next week because of monsoonal rains. Only the 2nd and 3rd sides (the only two to play "away" matches) were able to commence play.

Coromandel vs Keswick

First Day

Play Abandoned - rain

Second Day

One Day Match

The 1st XI walked out with one of, if not the youngest 1st XI teams produced by the club to face second placed Keswick at Hewett Oval and after winning the toss Coromandel elected to bat sending in their new look opening partnership of Daniel Jenkinson and Simon Leek. After a positive opening partnership Jenkinson battled his way to 48.
New boy on the block came to the crease and looked like he belonged from the start. Ben Moore in his first 1st XI game for the club over-powered the Keswick attack putting them to all parts of the ground and beyond on his way to a quick fire 57.
The innings was finished off by the usually paced Chambers who took a liking to the bowling and played superb shots, dispatching them to all sections of the ground on his way to a rapid 35.
The home side set Keswick an imposing target of 192.
After a controlled start the bowling attack lead by Matt Laming, Tristan Graham and Jenkinson tied down the batsmen forcing them into shots bringing down their downfall. Laming finished with figures of his 2/33 from his 8. Moore debuting was brought into the attack and the Keswick batsmen tried their luck. However in a man of the match performance, Moore remained disciplined and finished with figures of 3/41. Jenkinson chipped in with the important wicket of one of the 1st IX's previously troublesome batsmen (Heath Mackay) and from there the bowling attacked turned the screws and superb fielding and catching, bowling Keswick out for 177. The day was summed up by lightning fielding with one of the young guns Needham, throwing down the stumps leaving the batsmen stranded...

Statistician's note:
Keswick's Heath Mackay has been a thorn in the side of Coromandel 1st XIs over the years.
As well as having a fine record for Adelaide & Suburban in interassociation matches, in seven previous innings against our club he had amassed 589 runs at an average of 117.8!
His average has now dropped to 101.5. Well done Jenko!

... and another note:
1st XI captain Tristan Graham believed that this may be the youngest 1st XI team ever from Coromandel.
In fact the average age of the team in this match is 22 years, 251 days, ranging from 17 to 30 years. The youngest (according to the statistician's records, which are incomplete due to the absence of birthdates for many of the past players) was the side from round 8 last season. The average age in that match was 22 years, 160 days.

Coromandel 192 (B.Moore 57, Jenkinson 48, Chambers 35)
Keswick 177 (B.Moore 3/41, Laming 2/33) Scoreboard

Coromandel II vs South Road

First Day

The 2nd XI were able to start this round, due to a will to play by both sides. Credit has to go to South Road for the work they did on the pitch to ensure a start.
The toss was won by South Road who decided to bowl.
Andrew Magarey and Rahsaan Oakey opened the batting with Rahsaan falling only eight balls later for one. This sent Darren Coulter to the crease and he stayed with Andrew until the bitter end with some determined and skillful batting: the highlight being a square cut by Coults which absolutely raced to the long wet grassed boundary for four. But that bitter end came in just 10.5 overs with the score at 1/30. Andrew Magarey (9) and Darren Coulter (10) will have lots of fast work to do next week. In this rain shortened match Coromandel have only 25 overs left to face and then South Road 36.

Coromandel 1/30 (10.5 ov.)

Second Day

36 overs per side

Wasn't much exciting news this week to report for our 2nd XI. This round they were up against top and undefeated side South Road and they showed Coromandel why that is.
Resuming from last week, with 25 overs remaining in the innings in this shortened match, Coro had 25 overs left to bat. All started well like it had finished off with the Coulter and Magarey partnership continuing where it left off, but when Coulter left the crease for 20 they went down hill fast being all out for 79. Magarey top scored with 35.
The only real highlight of the game was the superb bowling by the four bowlers used: Mark Eglinton, David Lane, Jarrod McCauley and Nathan Morelli. McCauley took the only wicket before South Road passed the 80 run target.

Coromandel 79 (A.Magarey 35, Coulter 20)
South Road 1/82 (McCauley 1/9) Scoreboard

Coromandel V vs North Haven VI

First Day

Play Abandoned - rain

Second Day

One Day Match

A brilliant hundred by Adam Catford and a patient 45 by George Chittleborough pushed the team to a very solid total of 263 on an extremely slow Manson Oval.
They defended that total very comfortably. The fielding and bowling was the most disciplined it had been all season with all the bowlers being very economical and the fielders not giving away any cheap runs. The North Haven team was bowled out for a miserable total of 70. The best of the bowlers were Josh Mcdonald (4/5) and Liam Carman (3/14).

Coromandel 6/263 (Catford 100, Chittleborough 45, Pope 28)
North Haven 70 (McDonald 4/5, Carman 3/14, Pope 1/2, Harrip 1/2, Catford 1/10) Scoreboard
