A day for breaking records.
Russell King was dismissed for a relatively modest score of 22, however it included his 1000th run for Coromandel: in a club record 20 matches.
Tristan Graham was demoted in the batting order to number 10, and he responded with a blistering 60 from only 43 deliveries.
He brought up his half-century in only 36 balls, and from the same delivery scored his 1500th run for the club. He joins Darren Cheek (in his innings of
59 against Coromandel Ramblers) with the fastest 50 this season.
Graham and Mark Eglinton (37 not out) had combined for a club record (1st XI) 9th wicket partnership of 105, after the team was in trouble at 8/180. The dismissal of Graham was followed by a declaration by captain Matt Laming, giving his bowlers a crack at the struggling Mitchell Park batting lineup - that has failed to score more than 182 this season.
On a statistical note:
Russell King has reached the 1000 run milestone in fewer matches than any other player, since 1944/45. The previous record was 21, held jointly by Colin Grant and Kym Knuckey. He however has fallen just one innings short of reaching 1000 runs in
fewest innings having batted 22 times.
Tristan fell a mere two runs short of the 1st XI record for the
highest score batting at number 10. The record is held by John Forbes who scored 62 just over 30 years ago.

The Paringa Park curse has been lifted: after four consecutive defeats (two outright), our 3rd XI has finally tasted success on the infamous "postage stamp" known as Paringa Park Primary School. Resuming at 1/30, Adam Rowe and Casey Thomas-Averis continued in pursuit of Plympton Footballers' first innings of 187. The second wicket stand carried the total to 86 before Rowe's innings was cut short just three runs from a half-century, a sense of de ja vu felt after he scored 49 last year at the same venue. It was a welcome return to form, having been starved of success since his memorable century in October. Originally sent in as a "night-watchman" Thomas-Averis reached the same score before he was caught at mid wicket with the total at 127. This brought junior sensation Nick Wark to the crease and in partnership with Gareth Bruce they plundered 45 runs from the next five overs to seal the win. Bruce's 39 included four sixes and Wark's scorching half-century was achieved from only 41 deliveries. The six premiership points further cement the reigning Section Five premiers into second position on the Section Four Premiership Table and the measuring stick will be next week's top of the table clash with leaders Seaton II at Blackwood Hill. On a statistical note: Coromandel has played twelve matches at Paringa Park Primary School, with a history stretching as far back as 1972. Today's success is only the second at this ground. The other was in 1995 for the 4th XI against Plympton Footballers en route to the famous section seven premiership. |
